Recessionista Bride Series: Bridesmaids; 1 Color, Many Styles?

May 11, 2009

We're starting a wedding-season and recession-season bridal series with tips on budget conscious wedding planning. With the cost of weddings, they could be useful for many whatever the year.

On to it----- so have you heard about the brides who pick one color of dress but let their bridesmaids choose from different styles, so that everyone has a better chance of being flattered? Well how to do this for different budgets, too, when boutiques seem to always charge at least $100?

What about going with that common "black" tie color itself, of course black? The 'maids could then pick from different stores too. The trick is: command all shiny dresses, none matte for they may be different darknesses.

An argument to this different price points idea is that bargain dresses may not look as good as designer ones, if any of the party, or the person paying for the entire event, can afford that anyway. I wonder what you fashionistas think of this idea, so here's a poll!

Brides, you can use this to help you decide whether this is a good idea.

The ladies who sew can save money and get the perfect, figure flattering fit by making their own dress. We also have wedding parties that buy a bolt of fabric for all the girls to have dresses made from (and they go to people in their family or neighborhood to sew up the dress style that will flatter them most). Recessionistas love to sew in a down economy!

Yeah, but that takes advanced sewing. Who knows, in three-or-so years time when I'm planning my own wedding (I have found my man so I'm not just crazy with that time line) I might be there, but probably not. Eye-wink) My wonderful man would tell me not to give up on that thought. Smiling

I like the idea of getting the fabric and going to a seamstress, but is that inexpensive?

I am going to showcase some handmade bridesmaid dresses that won't break the bank, too!

Thanks so much for your comment.

My best friend did the thing with a bolt of fabric. Buying in bulk, she got a great deal on the most luscious deep red, high quality silk. We were fortunate - she had two amazing seamstresses in the family, and they had a couple of friends to help spread the work around. Every bridesmaid was custom fitted in a wonderful dress. They were all made to the same length for continuity in photos, and even had extra touches. Mine, for example, had detachable straps since the bride was opposed to any strapless dresses for the pictures. I still came out with a fabulous crimson dress that I've been able to wear to Christmas parties and such. Another maid had a bodice detached from the gown for more versatility. We all looked fabulous!
