Stylish with Substance

A woman should be two things; classy & fabulous - Mlle Gabrielle Chanel

Out of My Closet: It's all about the necklace

August 18, 2010

OR... Eep! I bare my own thighs for my Healthy Body Image Campaign!

Here I am again. My struggle with self-photography or just me/fashion-photograhy continues. These ones (made from video - easy-peasy) are small but what's worse is they are really poor quality. Somehow they look far worse on the blog than they do just on my computer! Taking them kept me sane but viewing these images, with poor cropping (sorry), disheartens me. I do have a close-up, too, but taken from arm's reach (easy but not recommended). The way I really want to take photos is with a remote control, but my "older" (but good) model of camera isn't compatible with one, that I know of.

Back to the drawing board for next time - le grande sigh.

So anyway, this was my Casual Monday; that day I was mostly working to help animals from afar, so was focused less on fashion. I had just gotten this Betsey Johnson necklace at Nordstrom Rack. By the way, if in the market for jewelry like this, you should try the Rack; who cares if a signature style like hers is a tad older?

  • Top: Target, altered (here's the original version - I quickly grew to detest that bow)
  • Shorts: "Jolt" (was @ Dillard's)
  • Bag: Marc Jacobs (Stam)
  • Shoes: Payless (black fabric wedges with faux cork)
  • Necklace: Betsey Johnson
  • Earrings: Handmade by me
  • *update*oopsIforgot* Sunglasses: Kate Spade

*Update* I uploaded new crops and added a close-up of my earrings. ... And now I anxiously prepare for a new war with photography! I wish there were two of me! (Just don't let the 2nd me be skinnier!)

Hi Ella, cute top and necklace. I know what you mean about self photography. I am fairly new to fashion blogging, or blogging at all and have been learning how to take my own photos. I have actually been having more fun with the photography aspect of it than the outfits!! Have fun and a great day!!

I think you look cute in the outfit and I didn't notice any problems with the photos Smiling

Thanks for your comment, Jodi! I'm one of the oldest bloggers in the topic of fashion, but I think the self-photography is much newer. It used to be all products, and I've usually written opinion pieces and varied content. I am VERY new to showcasing my ensembles.

I'm glad you're having fun! Clothes will always be one of my top sources of fun, but so far, even though I like photographing other things, having myself shot by me or even someone else is a huge stressor!

At least I've recently lost 7.5 lbs! I'm hopefully on my way to a lot more confidence. But even now I've learned to love more parts of myself than 5 to 10 years ago. Smiling

Thanks, Mike! I fixed the cropping yesterday morning, at least. I also resized them. I just compared these to the crisp shots other bloggers take, and well my own crisper shots, and I'm not happy with them.

Maybe I should strive for a happy medium? I don't want to be miserable during the shoots, either.

I love that jewelry! Kudos to you for rocking shorts, they are the type of clothing I struggle the most with. You're right about the quality of the video-capture stills, they miss the details, but they're good for the thumbnails so we can see the whole outfit.
